Colt World Series day one recap

The 64th edition of the Colt World Series opened with four exciting games from historic Loeb Stadium in Lafayette, Indiana Friday. The Upland, California was electric, as it put up nine runs in an opening game victory. Seoul, Korea pulled off a come-from-behind 9-8 win in Game #2 in which the team scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bay County, Michigan won a 1-0 pitcher's duel in which the only run scored came on a wild pitch, and first-time Colt World Series participant the Netherlands put on a show in its 10-run rule victory in the last game of the day.

Game #1: Upland, California 9 Crowley, Louisiana 3

West Zone Champion Upland, California’s defeated South Zone Champion Crowley, Louisiana Friday in the Colt World Series’ opening game 9-3 in Lafayette, Indiana.

Crowley got back-to-back singles from Hunter Wriborg and Beau Louviere, and Wriborg was brought home on a two-out single from Landon Lafleur, giving the Cajuns an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Upland responded immediately in the top of the third when, after the first two batters were retired, Juan Garza was hit by a pitch. Garza stole second and advanced to third when the throw from Jon Thibodeaux was wild.

Michael Santana singled to right, bringing home Garza and tying the game at one. Christian Serna followed with a single of his own, bringing home Santana. Serna advanced to second on the throw, and then advanced to third when Joshua Sosa grounded to second, but Nicholas Zeman was unable to hang on to the ball and both runners were called safe.

Robert Lopez Jr. and Jairemy Pulido drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Alfred Castaneda followed with a single to center, scoring Sosa and Lopez, who were able to cross the plate when Castille was unable to field to throw in from the outfield. Emilio Mata flew out to center to end the inning, but the damage had been done and Upland held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.

Crowley was able to generate some response in bottom of the third, when Wyatt Verrett drove a double down the line in left. Jacob Bernard laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Verrett to third, and Verrett scored on a fielder's choice on Nicholas Zeman's ground ball to second. Zema came around to score when Austyn Benoit hit a grounder to short and Michael Santana couldn't hang on, making the score 5-3. Hunter Wriborg fouled out to right fielder Colby Manning, and Benoit was gunned down by catcher Robert Lopez Jr. when trying to steal second, ending the inning.

Upland got off to a good start in the top of the fourth when Manning drew a walk, followed by Juan Garza's single to left. Santana grounded into a fielder's choice, giving Upland runners at second and third with one out. Christian Serna singled to left, scoring Manning, and advancing Garza to third. Joshua Sosa walked to load the bases, but an attempted squeeze play was snuffed out as Robert Lopez's bunt was fielded by Castille and flipped to home for the out. Jairemy Pulido was struck out looking, and Upland headed to the bottom of the fourth with a 6-3 lead.

Upland was able to add to its lead yet again in the top of the fifth, as Emilio Mata lined a one-out single to center and then proceeded to steal second. Colby Manning grounded to third, but Garza followed with a single to left, which scored Mata from second, giving Upland a 7-3 lead.

After Michael Santana flew out to left to start the top of the sixth, Christian Serna reached first on an error by the shortstop Landon Lafleur. Sosa laid down a beauty of a bunt down the third base line, giving Upland runners at second and third with one out. Both runners moved up a base on a balk from reliever Kameron Aucoin. Robert Lopez grounded into a fielder's choice, which brought in Serna, making to score 8-3 in favor of Upland. Pulido followed with a single to center, scoring Sosa and running the tally to 9-3. Alfred Castaneda then hit a blooper to shallow right field, but it dropped in after Austyn Benoit tried to make a diving play and the ball squeezed out of his glove. Mata flew out to right to end the inning, but Crowley headed to the bottom half of the frame needing a massive comeback.

After Sosa retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, Crowley managed to make a late threat in the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Bernard came up with two outs and smashed a double off the wall in right, but Nicholas Zeman grounded out to second, ending the game and giving Joshua Sosa the complete game victory 9-3.

With the win, Upland advances to play in Game #11 Sunday at 4 p.m. ET/ US. Crowley plays its next game Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Game #6, an elimination game.

Game #2: Seoul, Korea 9 Greensboro, North Carolina 8

Trailing 8-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Seoul, Korea was staring down defeat against East Zone Champion Greensboro, North Carolina in Game #2 at the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Indiana. But, thanks to a six-run, come-from-behind rally, Seoul pulled out a 9-8 walk off victory.

Greensboro got on the board first after lead off hitter and starting pitcher Jacob Edwards singled to center and the proceeded to steal second. After Isiah Rehm was struck out swinging, CJ Neese lined a single to left, which was enough to score Edwards, making the score 1-0. Isiah Hairston flew out to center and Grayson Chaney grounded to second to end the inning.

Both offenses were held in check until to top of the fourth, when Clay Dilday roped a two-out single to left, then advanced on a wild pitch. Derek Martinez then singled to left, putting runners at the corners with two out. Gus Hughes followed with a single to left, scoring Dilday and making it 2-0.

Cade Darnell continued the two-out rally with a single of his own, and Martinez was able to score after a fielding error by center fielder Lee Jong Min. Jacob Edwards singled on a play in which he hit a dribbler back to the pitcher and beat the throw, which scored Hughes, making it 4-0 Greensboro. After advancing to third on the single from Edwards, Cade Darnell scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.

Greensboro added to it lead in the top of the fifth, when CJ Neese was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Isiah Hairston followed by smashing a triple to deep center, scoring Neese and stretching the Greensboro lead to 6-0.

Grayson Chaney was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on defensive indifference. Clay Dilday hit into a fielder’s choice and advanced Chaney to third. Mason Canoy stuck out, but the catcher Young dropped the ball, forcing him to throw down to first to complete the play. The throw allowed Chaney to advance to third and Hairston to come home, extending the Greensboro lead to 7-0.

The runners were able to advance again on a wild pitch as Grayson Chaney came home on the play to make the score 8-0. Korea found its offense in the bottom of the fifth, as Jang Ye Jun laced a double to left, then was driven home by Kim Tae Ho’s single to center, making the score 8-1. Ho then stole third and scored when Lee Gyu Min grounded into a fielder’s choice, closing the gap to 8-2.

No Jee Woo singled to right and stole second, then was brought home as Shim Jae Young singled to center, making it 8-3. After a quiet 6th inning, Korea really made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as Kim Tae Ho doubled to left and Lee Gyu Min, putting runners at first and second with no outs. Woo doubled to left, scoring Ho and moving Min to third. Min then scored on a wild pitch, making the score 8-5, with still no one out.

After Woo advanced to third on the wild pitch, Shim Jae Young single to center, bringing in Woo and making it 8-6 in favor of Greensboro. After Heo Chan Min lined out, Na Seung Yeup singled to right, putting two runners on. Following Yun Jae Yeong’s strikeout, Lee Jong Min drove a pitch to deep right that came off the glove of Chaney and dropped to the grass, scoring both Young and Yeup, tying the game at eight.

Jang Ye Jun followed with a single up the middle and Min beat the throw home to give Seoul, Korea a walk off 9-8 win. Jang Ye Jun was the star of the game at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and the game-winning hit and RBI.

With the win, Seoul advances to Game #8 Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET/US in the winner’s bracket to face Mexico Zone Champion Los Mochis, Sinaloa. After the loss, Greensboro drops into the loser’s bracket and will play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination Game #5.

Game #3: Bay County, Michigan 1 Oranjestad, Aruba 0

Pitching and defense ruled in Game #3 of the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Indiana, as North Zone Champion Bay County, Michigan defeated Caribbean Zone Champion Oranjestad, Aruba 1-0 in a true pitcher’s duel.

Bay County’s Branden Brown highlighted the game, as he turned in a dominating performance in a complete game one-hit shutout, while striking out eight. Brown’s counterpart, Aruba’s Norangelo Jacobus, was nearly as dominant, as he went six innings, giving up only one run on four hits, while striking out four.

The only scoring in the game took place in the bottom of the third, as Bay County’s Alec Prokopenko led off the inning with a walk and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Garrett Glysz. Carson Kwapiszewski reached on a grounder to short that was bobbled. Prokopenko advanced to third on the play, and the bases were loaded, after John Dorman drew a walk, giving Bay County a great opportunity to score.

The North Zone Champions’ Cooper Kauffold attempted to squeeze the run home with a bunt, but Oranjestad’s pitcher Norangelo Jacobus fielded the bunt and flipped home to get the force out. However, Jacobus threw a wild pitch to the next batter and Kwapiszewski came home, scoring the only run of the game. The wild pitch in the bottom of the third was the only blemish on Jacobus’ record.

Brown threw 105 pitches in his outing, and kept the Aruba hitters off balance all day, as he seldom gave up solid contact. Brown also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a double, rounding out a stellar day both in the batter’s box and on the pitcher’s mound.

With the win, Bay County advances to play in a winner’s bracket Game #7 Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET/US against Harry Bradway Classic Area Host Winner Hoosier North, Indiana. After the close loss, Oranjestad will face Crowley, Texas in an elimination Game #6 tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Game #4: Netherlands 10 Lafayette (All-Stars), Indiana 0

European Zone Champion Netherlands put on a spotlight performance in its first-ever Colt World Series game in Lafayette, Indiana, as the team defeated Host Lafayette (All-Stars), Indiana 10-0 in a five inning, 10-run rule Game #4 Friday.

Netherlands starter Luuk Ter Beek nearly had a no-hitter, as he kept Lafayette hitters at bay until yielding a double to Jacob Kyle in the top of the fifth inning. Ter Beek struck out five and walked none in a dominating performance in which he was able to keep the Lafayette All-Stars off balance and uncomfortable throughout the duration of the game.

The Netherlands got their bats going early as they pounced on Lafayette starter Jackson Ross for four runs in the top of the first. After giving up a lead off walk to Jeandro Tromp, Denzel Bryson and Tyler Boersma both singled to load the bases. Ross hit Darryl Collins, allowing the first run of the game to cross the plate. Ruendrick Piternella lined into a double play in which center fielder Jake Marin made the catch then threw the ball to second, doubling off the runner. Collins then stole second and Bryson crossed the plate on the throw to second, giving the Netherlands a 2-0 lead.

Nolan Beugeling reached base on an error by the third baseman TJ Preston and then stole second and advanced to third when the throw to second was misplayed, giving Collins the opportunity to score from third on the throw. Beugeling then scored from third on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 4-0. The Netherlands were able to tack on to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Thomas Kwakernaak singled to right and stole second with one out.

Mick Vos then singled to right and Kwakernaak was able to score when first baseman Carson Barrett misplayed the throw in from the outfield and Vos advanced to second on the play, stretching the lead to 5-0. Jeandro Tromp drew a walk and Tyler Boersma was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Relief pitcher Adam Dienhart walked Darryl Collins, which scored a run and gave the Netherlands a 6-0 lead. Ruendrick Piternella reached on an error, which scored Tromp and Boersma, pushing the lead to 8-0. Beugeling lined a double to left center, which scored Collins and gave the Netherlands yet another run, making the score 9-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Netherlands had a shot to end the game due to the mercy rule, which comes into effect if a team is winning by ten or more runs in the fifth inning or later. Shuruengelo Mingeli led off the inning with a single to center and was able to advance to second when the center fielder fumbled the ball. Mick Vos grounded out to first and Mingeli took third with some heads-up base running on the play. Max Kops hit a sharp grounder to second, and Trey Cochran tried to cut down the runner at the plate, but Mingeli beat the throw and crossed the plate with the game-clinching run, giving the Netherlands the 10-0 victory.

The Netherlands will have a day off Saturday, as they await the winner of Game #8 between Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico and Seoul, Korea in Game #12 Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET/US in the winner’s bracket. Lafayette next takes the field Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET/US in an elimination Game #5 against Greensboro, North Carolina.
